History

"Le Bazar Acadien"

Le Bazar Acadien was a community festival in Cocagne, NB that ran from 1974 to the early 80s. It featured parades, pageants, contests, raffles, and traditional fair competitions — including tug-of-war and arm wrestling events that grew into world-class teams.

Adrien Després (Séb’s dad), was one of the key instigators of this festival. He later founded the Cocagne International Hydroplane Regatta.

The Neptune Drive-In was one of the major sponsors of the original Bazar Acadien. Every market day, we’re not just hosting vendors; we’re stewarding a piece of local history.

The Bazar Neptune Logo

The original Bazar Acadien logo, drawn the first time in the mid-1970s, featured a soft-shelled clam, as a nod to our coastal roots. It was designed by Adrien’s lifelong friend, Louis Bilodeau, who graciously authorized its adaptation for Bazar Neptune. Louis had also composed the Bazar’s song, which we proudly play at the opening and closing of each market day.

For Bazar Neptune, that mollusk evolved into an oyster — intentionally. Neptune is the Roman god of the sea, and the oyster belongs to his waters. The symbol anchors the Bazar firmly within the world of the Neptune Drive-In.

The oyster also appears in The Walrus and the Carpenter, the Wonderland poem that inspired the name of our on-site smokehouse, Morse et Marteaux. The logo quietly connects our businesses through shared story.

But most importantly, oysters create pearls. A visit to the Bazar should feel like a treasure hunt — each booth a discovery, each vendor a hidden gem. Like the oyster, we transform effort into something worth finding. The oyster represents heritage, resilience, and the promise of something remarkable inside.

The Bazar Neptune is produced by Shediac Wonderland, the family of story-driven businesses created by Sébastien Després and Heather Wright. Le Moque-Tortue (our board game bistro), Morse et Marteaux BBQ Smokehouses & Lobster Shacks(with four locations throughout Shediac), Le Griffon (bed & breakfast), The Neptune (our Drive-In Theatre), Adorable Chocolat (our artisanal chocolaterie), Bazar Neptune (Saturday market), the Shediac Renaissance Faire, and Witzend Tours & Adventures (tours, escape rooms, and concierge): each one a chapter of a larger story about what happens when a community decides to take play seriously.

The Bazar Neptune is the chapter where everyone is invited to bring what they’ve made and find what they’ve been missing.
